For many people, retirement signals a slower pace of life. But for some Malaysians, it's also a chance to try something new, stay active, and stay connected with others.

That's what's happening at Sunway Lagoon, where retirees can work as Senior Park Ambassadors (SPA).

The programme was created for older adults who still want to stay connected with the community while doing something enjoyable.

The initiative recently caught attention online after an Instagram user shared videos of retirees working around the park

Instagram user Richard Stephenson (@cikgurich) recently shared clips of the ambassadors at work, highlighting the programme.

"In a place built for fun, I think this is one of the most meaningful things happening behind the scenes. Kudos to you, Sunway," he said.

Richard also pointed out that many of the SPAs are equipped with personal microphones, so they don't have to strain their voices throughout the day.

Malaysia is expected to become an ageing nation by 2030, with 15% of the population projected to be aged 60 and above, according to the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN)

Instead of treating retirement as the end of working life, Sunway Theme Parks introduced the SPA initiative as a way for retirees to stay active and socially engaged without the pressure of a demanding corporate career.

The programme began when the parks reopened after the pandemic, and according to Sunway Lagoon assistant manager of human resources Vijayan Monoharan, the response was overwhelming.

"We had so many calls from people asking if the role was real," he shared last year.

Rather than focusing on stressful responsibilities, the SPA role revolves around sharing recommendations and chatting with visitors throughout the day

66-year-old Lionel Chang, who previously worked in the telco industry, said he wanted to remain active after retirement, just without the stress that usually comes with work.

"Being a senior, we can't handle stress the way we used to," he explained. "But here, everything is calmer. Even waking up early and beating the traffic don't feel stressful."

Another SPA team member, Vijayan, said moving away from the corporate world completely changed how he felt about work.

"I wanted to do something I enjoyed, like chatting with customers. I love helping people out," he shared.

Now, part of his day involves following wildlife rangers around the park and learning new things along the way.

"It keeps things fun and fresh," he added.

Then there's Foong, who previously worked in the newspaper industry and naturally enjoys talking to people.

"Sometimes our conversations go on for more than 20 minutes — I love it," she said.

The SPAs are stationed across different parts of the parks, helping guests with directions and suggestions

What may seem like a simple interaction to them often becomes a memorable moment for visitors, especially for families, children, and tourists who appreciate having someone patient and approachable around.

It's also a reminder that retirement doesn't always have to mean slowing down completely, just doing things at a different pace.
