Want to meld your love for mahjong and art?
You can try your hand at this mahjong-colouring workshop in Kuala Lumpur.
Karen Aruba Art, a renowned Hong Kong-based brand specialising in mahjong art and craft, is collaborating with local art café FabCafe Kuala Lumpur to host a Malaysian Heritage: The Art of Mahjong Workshop on 26 April.
This workshop, led by a father-daughter team, Karen and Master Ricky Cheung (whose expertise spans over 50 years), teaches participants how to craft mahjong tiles by hand, offering a hands-on exploration of the game's artistic side.

In this two-hour workshop, you'll learn to colour in intricate designs on laser-engraved mahjong tiles
Instructors Karen and Master Ricky will offer guidance on colour choices, application techniques, and traditional mahjong colour schemes.
With all materials and tools provided, you can paint vivid colours to newly illustrated and engraved patterns so you can create your own personalised mahjong tiles.

And more excitingly, you can also customise your tiles with instructor Karen's unique Malaysian designs, featuring iconic symbols like the majestic Twin Towers, the King of Fruits — the durian, or the Langkawi Sky Bridge!

By the end of the workshop, you'll receive an elegant gift box to house your creations.
Here's what will be included in the gift box:
Six laser-engraved mahjong tiles, comprising:
- Tiles 1 to 4: Your choice of any four digits (Dates like 2025, 0426, and special numbers)
- Tile 5: One illustration pattern (Happy Life, Lucky, Happy Birthday, Home Sweet Home, Happy Anniversary)
- Tile 6: One Malaysian design (Tropical Floral, Durian, Langkawi Wonder, Twin Tower Pride)
The workshop also offers a chance to experience the traditional craft of drilling mahjong tiles
You'll learn to use a bow drill to carefully create holes in the tile's surface, with guidance on techniques to prevent damage like cracking or splintering.
