The culinary world has a new reigning champion as Butter Garlic Naan officially claims the top spot on the global stage

According to the latest TasteAtlas rankings, the Butter Garlic Naan now holds the title of Best Rated Bread, dethroning Malaysia's iconic Roti Canai.

Once a delicacy reserved for Mughal royalty, this pillowy, tandoor-baked flatbread has evolved into a global comfort food favourite, celebrated for its soft texture, smoky char, and buttery garlic finish.

Meanwhile, Roti Canai, with its flaky, layered artistry, remains a beloved Malaysian staple and now sits in the 5th spot on the list of 'Best Breads in the World'.

While both breads share Indian roots, their identities diverge.

Butter Garlic Naan is leavened, soft, and, as the name suggests, finished with garlic butter, giving it a rich, indulgent flavour. Roti Canai, on the other hand, dazzles with its skilful spinning to create delicate, crispy layers, a craft synonymous with Malaysian street food culture.

Why Butter Garlic Naan took the crown

While the intricate, flaky layers of Roti Canai have long fascinated international foodies, the aromatic lure of scorched garlic and melted butter has finally tipped the scales in favour of this Indian classic.

Culinary experts and global diners credit Butter Garlic Naan's rise to its unique combination of accessibility, flavour, and versatility.

Once a luxury reserved for Mughal royalty in the Indian Subcontinent, it has become a staple in Indian restaurants worldwide, making it familiar to diners across continents.

The buttery, garlicky aroma elevates the flatbread into an indulgent comfort food that appeals to a broad range of palates.

Its ability to pair perfectly with rich, creamy gravies like Butter Chicken, Dal Makhani, and Shahi Paneer gives it a versatility few breads can match, cementing its spot as the world's most beloved flatbread.

Despite dropping four spots, Roti Canai remains a national culinary icon, often enjoyed with dhal and teh tarik for breakfast.
