With the rainy season setting in, reports of weather-related damage have been on the rise

In recent weeks, tree branches have fallen onto vehicles at several locations across the Klang Valley, including Jalan Ampang, Taman Desa, and Mont Kiara.

Flash floods were also recorded in major areas such as Shah Alam and Klang, where heavy downpours disrupted traffic and daily routines, leaving some motorists with damaged cars.

Despite the uptick in incidents, an estimated 78% of vehicle owners would not be able to file insurance claims for these losses. This is because most standard motor policies do not cover such events unless the vehicle owner has added on special perils protection.

It's easy to assume that since you have motor insurance, your car is safe. But that's not always the case, and it could end up costing you!

The moment a car hydro-locks during a flood, the repair bill skyrockets.

For car owners, the cost of repairing a flood-damaged car can quickly go up to RM20,000 or even more in severe cases.

Plus, if the damage is severe enough to write off the car, you are looking at losing your entire car! And this is just in the case of a flood, not even considering potential costs caused by other accidents like landslides, fallen trees, and other acts of nature.

The sad thing? Many Malaysians whose motor insurance claims were rejected just lacked one thing, a special perils coverage.

This crucial insurance add-on typically costs just 0.2% of your vehicle's sum insured. For example, cars insured at RM50,000 can be protected at just as little as RM100 a year.

In the grand scheme of things, that's less than RM1 a day, for peace of mind knowing that your car is covered no matter rain or shine. Car owners should definitely consider this, especially when the time comes for renewing or purchasing motor insurance.

Tip #1:
No road user should take the risk of driving through flooded roads, as vehicles with varying designs will respond differently to different water depths. It is important to note that having special perils coverage is not a license to drive through flooded areas. Safety should always be the priority, and avoiding flooded roads is essential to prevent damage and ensure personal safety.

Tip #2:
If your car stalls after driving through water, do not try to crank the engine again. This can cause hydro-lock which makes repairs significantly more expensive.

Tip #3:
Once safe, immediately contact your insurance provider or the Allianz Road Rangers if you are covered, to report the incident and arrange for professional towing.

With the rainy season and flash floods happening, find out how Allianz's Special Perils add-on can protect you and your car now
