If you've ever underestimated Malaysia's music scene, LANG is here to change your mind

At 22, most people are still figuring themselves out. LANG, on the other hand, has already dropped 34 songs in a single year, collaborated with artistes he genuinely admires, and earned a reputation as one of KL's most exciting producers.

Born and raised in KL, LANG (his surname) goes by many names — Dan to childhood friends, Shern to family — but professionally, he's staking his claim with one: LANG.

And he's doing it by putting producers front and centre, where he believes they've always belonged.

Ask him what he is before anything else, and the answer comes without hesitation: "Producer first, always".

In 2025 alone, LANG released 34 tracks alongside local and international musicians. Not as a strategy, but because that's what he loves.

"Bringing others' visions to life is my top priority and why I do this in the first place, nothing makes me happier," he told SAYS.

His solo work exists for a reason too: to prove he's not just the guy behind the console, but also a writer and frontman.

"The purpose for the solo projects was more to showcase that I am not just a producer behind the scenes, but a writer and frontman as well," he explained.

"To this day, I don't think producers get the love and credit they deserve. I want to make it so that when LANG is producing an artiste, both our names are held at equal values. I feel the solo projects help in making that a reality," he added.

When he's not in the studio, LANG is in the kitchen

"I love to cook. It's extremely therapeutic for me," he shared, likening it to producing music.

"Taking raw ingredients and shaping them into something beautiful that others can enjoy. It's literally like making a beat," he said.

Pasta is his specialty. "I know people say pasta is one of the easiest dishes you can make, but I strongly disagree. Usually the simplest things are the hardest to get right and I would say my pasta dishes are top 5 in the country," he said with confidence.

His journey from hobbyist to pro producer started in June 2022 with Malaysian singer-songwriter Adriel's Dancing Alone, the first track he produced that hit streaming platforms

"To this day, I am very grateful to Adriel as he was one of the first people who really gave me a shot and we've never looked back since," he shared.

For LANG, vibe is everything. "As a producer, vibe is essential and is the foundation for everything. If the room is not vibing, nothing spectacular usually comes. The people in the room have to feel great for the music to be great. Simple as that."

He draws inspiration from his close friends and collaborators, especially Out The Middle collective (OTM), a KL-based team of independent artistes looking to revamp Malaysia's music scene

"I'm blessed to say that I live a good life filled with love and good company. My best ideas usually come when I'm around them," he shared.

LANG is also one of the organisers behind OFF THE TRACK shows by OTM, which help give local artistes a platform to shine.

"People, especially big corporations and labels, need to recognise that our local scene is on par and if not better than what is out there. We have an amazing pool of artistes, and what most of us need is to simply be given a shot," he said.

Some of LANG's most personal work includes Stay Through The Pain, written with Faiz Najib, inspired by a real-life argument with a close relative.

"We needed time to really lay our egos down and to sit with our emotions before finally coming to terms with them," he explained.

Looking ahead, LANG is hitting pause on solo projects in 2026 to focus on production

"I feel like I've said all I needed to say on the GROUND ZERO MIXTAPE and want to soak up more life before I commit myself to another solo body of work," he said.

His ambitions are global. He dreams of producing for artistes like Kehlani, blending old-school R&B influences with his modern sound.

"I'm a huge fan of her vocal production work and vocals in general, which I feel coincide with my ear for vocal production and beat making as well," he shared.

And the ultimate goal? A Grammy in his hands within five years, while OTM tours internationally and OFF THE TRACK becomes a globally recognised platform.

LANG is proof that talent, vision, and work ethic can create something that competes with the best in the world.

And if his pasta is anything like his music, you can bet it'll leave a lasting impression too.
