YouTube Shorts’ New Metric Will Boost Your View Count — But There’s A Catch
YouTube Shorts will count every single instance a video appears on a user's screen.
If you've been tracking your YouTube Shorts performance, get ready for a change in how your views are counted
Starting 31 March 2025, YouTube will register a view the moment a short-form video begins playing, with no minimum watch time required, according to Mashable
Previously, YouTube Shorts views were only counted after an unspecified "few seconds" of watch time.
In contrast, standard YouTube videos register a view only if watched for at least 30 seconds.

Now, YouTube Shorts will count every single instance a video appears on a user's screen, even if the viewer scrolls past almost instantly
And thanks to Shorts' looping format, every replay will also add to the total.
YouTube says it's responding to creator feedback, offering a metric that better aligns with how shortform content is consumed.
With endless swiping, immediate loops, and passive viewing, the update provides a more complete picture of content reach rather than engagement.

For creators, this means view counts are likely to surge — but don't be fooled into thinking your audience has suddenly grown
The new metric reflects how many people have encountered your video, not how many meaningfully watched it.
To maintain a clearer understanding of engagement, YouTube is introducing "engaged views" in YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode. This approach aligns more closely with the previous system, giving creators an alternative benchmark for measuring true audience interest.
Ultimately, the update reinforces a broader trend in digital metrics: platforms are increasingly prioritising visibility over interaction. Whether this benefits creators or muddies the waters remains to be seen, but one thing is certain — your Shorts view count is about to look a lot bigger, even if your audience isn't.
