Local independent game studio Weyrdworks has officially announced a significant shift in the business model for its popular desktop companion title, Weyrdlets
Effective 17 March, the game will transition from its current free-to-play structure to a one-time premium purchase on Steam.
This move marks a pivotal moment for the Kuala Lumpur-based developer as it seeks to balance long-term project sustainability with the expectations of its growing global community.

According to the studio, the decision to pivot toward a paid model was heavily influenced by direct feedback from its player base
Many users expressed a distinct preference for premium titles over free-to-play experiences on Steam, which are often associated with hidden in-game purchases.
By adopting a fixed price point, Weyrdworks aims to ensure the game's continued development without resorting to aggressive monetisation tactics that could compromise its game's definitive "cosy" and relaxing atmosphere.

For Malaysian gamers and international fans who have yet to add the title to their libraries, the next few weeks represent a final window of opportunity
The developer has confirmed that Weyrdlets will remain free to download until the transition date.
Crucially, any player who claims the game before 17 March will retain permanent access to the title at no additional cost once it becomes a premium product.
The price change coincides with the highly anticipated launch of Weyrdlets 2.0.

This major update, scheduled for release on the same day as the pricing shift, promises a suite of enhancements and fresh features designed to deepen the virtual pet experience.
While the studio has remained relatively tight-lipped regarding specific technical upgrades, a full official trailer and detailed patch notes are expected to debut on launch day.
For the uninitiated, Weyrdlets is a virtual pet simulator that lives directly on a user's PC desktop, allowing for seamless interaction while working or browsing
Players can choose from three distinct creatures — the dinosaur-like Wagyu, the rabbit-inspired Mochi, or the feline-esque Gyoza — all rendered in the studio's signature vibrant art style.
These pets are not merely static images; they actively forage for in-game resources like Shinies and Prisms while the user is idle, which can then be exchanged for furniture and decor to customise the pet's home.

The game's interactive elements are varied, ranging from playing fetch and pet-tossing to maintaining the creature's fitness at an in-game gym.
