Tax season is here, and there is some good news if you have been spending money to stay connected to the Internet
According to the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), monthly home broadband and mobile data subscriptions fall under the Lifestyle Relief category for the Year of Assessment (YA) 2025.
You can claim a combined total of up to RM2,500 for digital lifestyle expenses from LHDN
This shared limit includes money spent on smartphones, tablets, books, and self-enhancement courses.
There are a few ground rules to help you successfully claim the relief.
"The subscription must be for personal use, not for business purposes," LHDN's guidelines state.

Ensure the bills are registered in your own name. A common mistake is claiming a bill under a spouse's or parent's name.
Even if you pay the bill, the tax relief only applies if the account is legally yours.
You must keep your monthly bills or payment receipts for at least seven years.
Digital PDFs from service provider apps are generally accepted for audits.

For monthly mobile plans, only the Internet data portion is claimable if the plan includes voice or SMS
However, for home fibre plans from local Internet providers, you can typically claim the full amount.
Also, you can claim expenses for multiple Internet subscriptions even if they're for different locations.
Meanwhile, business owners can claim tax relief for Internet subscription and mobile phone bill payments, provided they are solely for business purposes and not for personal use expenses.
