E-commerce platform Taobao Malaysia will launch a Bahasa Melayu interface in June, as part of its commitment to localising its services

In a statement to SAYS yesterday, 21 April, Taobao Malaysia said the upgrade is designed to cater to local users' language preferences, and address the growing demand for cross-border shopping.

"The announcement takes place amid a surge in global popularity of the Taobao app, which has recently become the second-most downloaded app in the US, Canada, and the UK, while claiming the top spot in France.

"In Malaysia, Taobao has also recently become the second-most downloaded app on the iOS shopping app chart — demonstrating strong local interest and trust in the platform," it said.

Taobao Malaysia's country head Jess Lew said the Malay-language interface will mark another significant milestone in the company's localisation journey.

"[It reinforces] our platform's commitment to providing every Malaysian user with a more accessible, seamless, and worry-free shopping experience," she said.

In September last year, Taobao Malaysia introduced its English-language interface, featuring artificial intelligence (AI) technology for automatic translation on the platform

Prices are displayed in ringgit to make shopping on the platform a breeze for Malaysian users.

The Chinese e-commerce platform offers a wide range of products, including tech devices, household items, and clothing, among others.

Its parent company, Alibaba Group — co-founded by Jack Ma — is listed on both the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange.
