Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) is spearheading an ambitious proposal to modernise the 2027 SEA Games by introducing virtual taekwondo as a competitive category
The national governing body believes that the inclusion of this digital discipline will significantly bolster Malaysia's gold medal prospects as the country prepares to host the biennial regional event.
According to Berita Harian, the sport is limited to two traditional categories, poomsae and kyorugi. Still, officials argue that bridging the gap between martial arts and the virtual world is the next logical step for the sport's evolution.

TM technical chairman R Dhanaraj explained that virtual taekwondo utilises a highly advanced motion-capture system that translates a practitioner's physical strikes into a digital environment
Unlike traditional combat, athletes wear specialised goggles and sensors to engage with a virtual opponent on screen.
While there is no physical contact between competitors, Dhanaraj stressed that the physical demands remain incredibly high. The system requires athletes to be in peak physical condition because every movement — from a high kick to a rapid punch — is mirrored exactly by their digital avatar.
It is, in essence, a high-stakes video game controlled entirely by the athlete's own body.

The push for this new event follows a strategic mission to ensure Malaysia emerges as the overall champion of the 2027 SEA Games
TM intends to propose three specific events within the virtual category, with a confident internal target of securing at least two gold medals.
This optimism is not without merit; Malaysian athlete Jayden Teng proved the nation's potential in the digital arena by clinching gold at the International Taekwondo Championship in Cambodia earlier this year.
Such success provides the necessary leverage for TM to lobby the Southeast Asian Games Federation for the event's official inclusion.
To ensure the proposal gains traction, Malaysia is actively seeking the endorsement of its regional neighbours
Dhanaraj noted that discussions have already commenced with counterparts in Singapore, who have expressed significant interest in the concept.
By fostering a coalition of supportive nations, TM hopes to create a unified front that will see the discipline added to the 2027 roster. The initiative reflects a broader global trend where sports like cycling and rowing have already successfully integrated virtual competitions into their professional circuits.
The shift towards new disciplines comes at a crucial time for the national squad as they look to improve upon recent performances
During the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, the Malaysian taekwondo contingent returned with a modest haul. The women's poomsae trio of Seah Jing Ying, Yow Mei Yee, and Wong Zin delivered the nation's sole gold medal on 14 December 2025.
Syafiq Zuber earned a silver in the men's 87kg kyorugi category, while the team also won four bronze medals.
