Smart doors are designed to keep intruders out, but one food delivery driver unlocked one with nothing but his face

A smart door lock in China gave its owner a scare after it mistakenly identified a food delivery rider as him and unlocked itself. The homeowner shared the bizarre incident online, which happened on the evening of 10 August.

According to his post, he had ordered food, and when the rider arrived, he hung the order on the doorknob. Suddenly, the smart lock's facial recognition system scanned the rider's face and, believing it was the homeowner, automatically unlocked the door.

The homeowner, who was lying in bed doing his homework at the time, was shocked to see his door swing open on its own. He quickly took a selfie to prove he hadn't left his bed, as reported by China News.

The homeowner, known as Shi, told the media that the delivery rider bore some resemblance to him

He also mentioned that he has contacted the smart lock manufacturer's customer service line regarding the issue.

According to the video on Weibo, the staff can be heard saying that the "issue should not have happened" and "could be caused by a software or hardware issue".

Shi said this was the first time he had encountered such an incident with the smart lock

He noted, however, that the device wasn't always flawless and sometimes required a second scan to properly verify a person's face.
