The new Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, a triple-folding smartphone, is launching soon as a special-edition product

Scheduled to go on sale on 12 December, the phone costs USD2,443 (roughly around RM10,050) and is more than double the price of the new iPhone 17.

The South Korean tech giant said the super-thin device, which unfolds into a 25.4cm display, offers "increased possibilities for creating and working".

China's Huawei released a similar triple-fold phone last year, also at a premium price, beating Samsung to the world-first claim.

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold features a dual-inward folding mechanism, making it unique

Available only in black, the Galaxy Z TriFold weighs 309g and measures less than 0.51cm at its thinnest point.

The phone also integrates generative artificial intelligence features, which can provide real-time assistance through screen or camera sharing.

Alex Lim, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics, called the device a "special edition" product, and the company admitted the Galaxy Z TriFold was "not intended for mass sales".

The launch of Samsung's latest device comes amid industry forecasts that Apple is expected to surpass Samsung as the world's top smartphone maker for the first time in 14 years by 2029

Research firm Counterpoint predicts Apple's smartphone shipments will hit a global share of 19.4% in 2025, while Samsung is projected to hold 18.7%, effectively dethroning its competitor.

Apple has been rumoured to be planning a foldable iPhone, potentially as early as next year.
