Roblox CEO David Baszucki recently appeared on the Hard Fork podcast to discuss the platform's moderation strategies, a timely appearance given the company's announcement of mandatory AI facial "age-gating" for open chat features
However, the interview — hosted by The New York Times' Kevin Roose and Casey Newton — turned intense, with Baszucki appearing visibly frustrated by the line of questioning.
Baszucki frequently evaded direct questions, attempting to steer the conversation back to his preferred talking points.

While he was candid about certain technical realities, such as acknowledging that older children often bypass text filters, his responses regarding child safety were notably vague.
For instance, when pressed on how well Roblox protects users from predators, he deflected by praising the company's "innovation" relative to its user base, rather than addressing the core issue.
He also attempted to shut down questions regarding a safety report by the now-defunct Hindenburg Research.
The discussion took a bizarre turn when Baszucki attempted a "gotcha" moment regarding the hosts' stance on AI moderation
"So, just so I have the clear response, the argument is that the shift has been from a more manual safety team and system to a more automated review process that may do a better job even if it costs less to operate…" Roose asked.
"Yeah, I would actually lean in harder," Baszucki responded.
"The shift would be constantly moving to higher quality, more accurate and more diligent systems. Can we review more? Can we do better?
"And say you and I, we're a system, what is the best way to review every single image going into Roblox at higher and higher quality? And say we figured out the best way to do that is to do it with better and better AI models. Would you pick that?" he added.
When this failed to land, he questioned the podcast's intent, expressing disappointment that they were focusing on serious topics like age-gating rather than "fun, funny things in the industry".
When the hosts noted his apparent frustration, he claimed he was merely trying to gauge the balance between "fun time" and the "superfocus" on scrutiny.

This follows a pattern of startling frankness from the CEO, who earlier this year admitted to the BBC that the most effective solution for child safety was keeping children off Roblox entirely.
Ultimately, this latest performance is unlikely to instil confidence in parents already concerned about the platform's ongoing legal and safety challenges.
