Social platform website Reddit has filed a lawsuit asking Australia's High Court to overturn the social media ban for users under 16
Filed by lawyers Perry Herzfeld and Jackson Wherrett, the suit also challenged Reddit's inclusion under the ban, arguing it violated free political expression, Reuters reported.
The suit comes two days after Australia's ban on social media users under the age of 16 came into effect on Wednesday, 10 December.
Instagram, Facebook, Threads, X, TikTok, and Reddit are among the social media platforms affected by the ban.
If the platforms do not sufficiently enforce the ban, they could face heavy fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (around RM135 million).
Underage users and their caretakers will face no punishment under the law.

A total of 10 social media platforms are now banned for under-16 Australian users.

On 16 November, two 15-year-olds, Noah Jones and Macy Neyland, filed a suit to block the law from coming into effect.
They are backed by a campaign group called the Digital Freedom Project, which says that the ban robs young Australians of their implied freedom of political expression, as it restricts teenagers from being able to communicate online.
However, the Australian Constitution does not enshrine an explicit right to free speech, according to the Australian Human Rights Commission.
The High Court is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Jones and Neyland's case in February next year.
