After months of speculation and concept teases, Perodua is set to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) by the end of this month
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the news during a visit to Perodua's headquarters on Tuesday, 11 November, marking a major milestone for the local automotive scene.
According to The Edge Malaysia, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, has described the rollout as part of the "national agenda".

According to Anwar, the new model is designed to be affordable while meeting all national requirements, aiming to boost the economy rather than serve as a luxury item for the wealthy
"The EV to be launched will be affordable, meet national requirements, and be able to stimulate the economy," Anwar said during his engagement session with Perodua staff.
He also said the launch is a testament to local capabilities, proving that Malaysian engineering is ready for the electric era.
"The EV launch is proof that the automotive company not only has excellent R&D team expertise but is also very disciplined in terms of management and good governance," he added, noting that the government is fully backing the move.
While excitement is high, the initial rollout will be limited. Earlier reports indicated that production would start at a modest 500 units per month.
The vehicle, which will be over 30% locally assembled at Perodua's new facility in Rawang, is priced under RM80,000
It is specifically targeted at younger buyers and small families looking for an entry point into the EV lifestyle.
Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad noted the company's long history of mobilising Malaysians, having produced 5.5 million vehicles over 32 years.
"We have also invested RM13.4 billion since 1993, and Perodua is also preparing to overcome challenges in the future and invest in EV models," Zainal said.
With the launch just weeks away, all eyes are now on Rawang to see if this new model can replicate the ubiquity of the Myvi on Malaysian roads.
