The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is considering taking X to court over its chatbot's failure to prevent the generation of harmful deepfakes

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil revealed today, 13 January 2026, that the MCMC is weighing legal action against the social media giant.

According to the New Straits Times, the issue stems from a failure to keep users safe from harmful deepfakes and obscene content generated by the AI tool.

Speaking at a National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) event, Fahmi noted that the commission was considering taking X to court.

Fahmi likened the potential move to past legal actions taken against Telegram to ensure platform accountability

MCMC has also imposed a temporary restriction on Grok on 11 January 2026 after finding that the AI tool could be used to create non-consensual sexual images, particularly targeting women and minors.

While X Corp and xAI provided some feedback to the authorities, Fahmi described their response as inadequate.

He explained that a temporary restriction was necessary while discussions continued, though the door to the courtroom remained wide open.

Fahmi is now set to meet with the newly formed online safety committee to review further protections for families

The committee is chaired by Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, the retired Chief Judge of Malaya.

The minister emphasised that the Internet must be a secure space, particularly for children who are most vulnerable to AI misuse.

Hasnah and her team will be looking into various measures to tighten digital safeguards across the board.

For now, Grok remains off-limits for Malaysian users until X can prove it has implemented the technical guardrails required by local law.
