You might think you have full control over how your Instagram posts appear, but a new discovery suggests otherwise when your content shows up in Google Search

Users have noticed that their Instagram posts are appearing in search results with "clickbait" style headlines they never wrote.

It turns out that Meta is using artificial intelligence (AI) to automatically generate these titles, often without the creator's knowledge.

The issue was first highlighted by 404 Media, which reported that the AI-generated text is embedded in the webpage's code specifically for search engines

This means that while your post appears normal on the app, it could look completely different to someone searching for it online.

The controversy gained traction after author Jeff VanderMeer noticed one of his videos — a simple clip of a bunny eating a banana — appeared on Google with the headline: "Meet the Bunny Who Loves Eating Bananas, A Nutritious Snack For Your Pet."

VanderMeer had neither captioned the post nor described it in that way.

Other users, including a public library and cosplayers, have found similar "promotional" text attached to their content.

In one instance, a cosplayer's video was given a headline about finding locations in Seattle, despite the user never writing anything about that city.

Meta confirmed to 404 Media that Instagram recently started using AI to generate titles for search engine results

The company claims this is intended to help people "better understand" the content, though they admitted the AI-generated titles are not always accurate.

Tech experts noted that these headlines are likely generated to help Instagram posts rank higher in Google's algorithm.

However, for creators like VanderMeer, the feature is frustrating because it strips their work of its original context and replaces it with generic, spam-like text to make their authentic work look like calculated engagement bait.

Because the text is hidden in the metadata, most users won't even realise their posts have been rebranded by AI until they stumble upon them in a search.

Currently, the only way to prevent this is by adjusting your settings.

You can opt out by going to your Instagram privacy settings and disabling the option to allow search engines to index your profile, though this will make your account harder to discover overall.
