Malaysia has officially rolled out its upgraded emergency communication infrastructure, the Next Generation Emergency Response Services 999 (NG MERS 999), on Sunday, 16 November
According to Bernama, the digital system, developed by Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and the Communications Ministry, replaces the legacy MERS 999 platform to deliver faster, more accurate, and more efficient emergency assistance.

As part of the rollout, the new SaveME 999 app lets users send video, text, and multimedia distress alerts directly to emergency operators
In a statement, TM said the feature will be especially helpful for people with special needs.
"This places Malaysia among the first in the world to operationalise nationwide inclusive digital emergency access at a large scale.
"Members of the public may continue to call 999 as usual. The SaveME 999 app serves as an additional option, particularly for those who require accessible features," it said.

The NG MERS 999 system now incorporates AI-driven analytics, geolocation capabilities, and secure sovereign cloud hosting to improve call handling and enable real-time decision-making
It also supports Advanced Mobile Location (AML) for precise caller location and integrates a unified five-agency 999 platform.
"The upgraded system enhances operational efficiency, optimises resource deployment, and significantly improves response times across more than 800 locations nationwide," said TM.
TM Group chief executive officer Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said NG MERS 999 represents a leap forward in Malaysia's digital transformation, harnessing AI and multi-channel communications to empower faster, smarter and more inclusive emergency response for all.
The SaveME 999 app is now available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
