Google is trying to make the universal translator a reality. On 12 December, the tech giant announced a new beta feature that delivers real-time translations directly to your headphones.
The update retains the speaker's tone, emphasis, and cadence, letting you catch the nuance behind the words rather than just a robotic stream of text.
According to Google, the feature is currently rolling out via the Google Translate app.
If you have ever felt lost listening to a lecture abroad or watching a foreign film without subtitles, this might be the fix you need.

According to Rose Yao, Google's vice president of product and search, the tool is designed for seamless communication
"Whether you're trying to have a conversation… listen to a speech… or watch a TV show," users can now tap 'Live translate' and hear audio in their preferred language, she explained.
The best part is that you don't need fancy hardware to get started.
Google confirmed that the feature is compatible with any headphones, so you're not limited to the Pixel Buds ecosystem.

However, there is a slight catch: the beta is currently only available on Android devices in the US, Mexico, and India.
The service already supports more than 70 languages, making it a robust tool for travellers and language learners right out of the gate.
For those on Apple devices or living outside the initial launch regions, patience is required.
Google plans to expand the feature to iOS devices and more countries in 2026.
