Google has officially rolled out its enhanced fraud protection feature within Google Play Protect to all Android users in Malaysia

Launched yesterday, 28 April, the update serves as a vital shield for users concerned about their banking security.

The tech giant collaborated with the National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA) and the National Security Council (NSC) to launch the initiative.

It specifically targets malware-enabled scams by blocking "risky" sideloaded apps from web browsers or messaging platforms.

Google Play Protect now inspects app permissions in real time during unofficial app installations, or sideloading

Sideloading is the practice of installing apps from third-party sources rather than official app stores. By downloading files (like APKs) directly from websites, users can bypass store restrictions and access software that is unauthorised or region-locked.

However, the process also increases the risk of scams and fraud, as some of these apps include malicious software capable of bypassing the smartphone's security.

Google Play Protect is able to identify abused runtime permissions, such as reading SMSes or intercepting one-time passwords (OTPs).

If an app requests sensitive permissions, the installation is automatically blocked. Users receive a warning prompt explaining the increased risk of identity theft.

Google also announced mandatory developer identity verification to stop repeat offenders. By 2027, all apps on certified Android devices in Malaysia must come from verified developers.

Since 14 April, advertisers promoting financial services have been undergoing a verification process by Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission.

This ensures only legitimate institutions can run ads on Google platforms.

Google will also roll out its "Be Scam Ready" game in Bahasa Malaysia starting in the third quarter of 2026 to educate Malaysians on digital literacy

The game is aimed at helping users develop critical thinking skills to spot scams in real-life scenarios.

Google also provided USD5 million (RM19.76 million) in funding for the Scam Ready ASEAN initiative. The programme aims to reach over 200,000 Malaysians with digital safety resources.

Chief Executive of NACSA Dr Megat Zuhairy Megat Tajuddin welcomed the industry-led efforts, saying such measures strengthen Malaysia's overall cyber resilience.
