We have all tried to choose an easy-to-remember mobile number to avoid looking it up constantly. However, a buyer in Qatar redefined "luxury tech" in 2006.

On 23 May 2006, a mystery individual made history by spending QAR10 million (RM12.15 million) on a single phone number.

According to Guinness World Records, the winning bid for "666-6666" set a benchmark for the world's most expensive digits.

The record-breaking transaction occurred during a charity auction organised by the nation's primary telecommunications provider, Qatar Telecom (Qtel). Now known as Ooredoo QSC, the company hosted the event in Doha to raise funds for local social projects.

At the time of the sale, the purchase was valued at approximately USD2.75 million (RM10 million)

While most would use that cash to buy a fleet of supercars, this individual wanted the ultimate digital status symbol for their pocket.

The then-chairman of the Qatari telecommunications giant noted that the high price tag served a greater purpose than just individual bragging rights.

All auction proceeds were funnelled back into the community to support health and social development

To this day, the identity of the buyer who owns the world's priciest phone number remains a closely guarded secret.

Despite global headlines and a prominent feature in the 2006 Guinness World Records edition, the owner has chosen to stay anonymous.
