OpenAI has finally released the long-awaited 'Thinking' toggle on the ChatGPT Android app this week

This new feature lets users adjust the AI's reasoning depth, providing more thorough responses to complex queries.

The official app now includes a genuine 'Thinking' mode, a feature previously restricted to desktop browsers.

Tech outlet Bleeping Computer reported that the earlier version of the toggle simply redirected requests through 'Standard' mode, which used significantly less computing power.

The update introduces a toggle that lets users select from Auto, Instant, and Thinking modes

This choice determines the amount of time the AI spends processing a request before generating a reply.

This update aligns with the 'Extended Thinking' option already available for desktop users. It grants the AI additional time to handle complicated prompts, often resulting in higher accuracy and better answers.

As the rollout is ongoing, Android users should ensure their app is updated to the latest version. The new Thinking mode will then appear within the chat settings menu.

Users can now toggle between Standard and Extended thinking times for a better mobile experience.

At the time of writing, the new feature does not appear to be available for iOS users yet

This feature is restricted to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Free users continue to use the basic Thinking mode, which operates at Standard speed.

Alongside the toggle, OpenAI also launched a new formatting block feature. When a user requests an email draft, the text appears in a dedicated block for easier editing.

This tool allows for direct edits or specific change requests without needing to recreate the entire message. The feature began its rollout during the 2025 Christmas season and is now available to all users.
