ChatGPT has rolled out a new 'study mode' feature, aiming to transform the chatbot into a responsible learning partner for students
The update comes as universities grapple with a surge in academic cheating using artificial intelligence (AI).
According to The Guardian, a recent UK survey uncovered nearly 7,000 proven cases of AI misuse during the 2023-24 academic year.
Instead of just providing answers, the new mode, accessible via the chatbot's tools button, guides users through complex topics with step-by-step explanations, much like a personal tutor.

According to OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, the feature is designed to support a genuine learning process
Jayna Devani, OpenAI's international education lead, said the goal is to encourage constructive use of the platform.
"It's guiding me towards an answer, rather than just giving it to me first-hand," she explained.
The tool is especially useful for homework help and exam preparation. According to OpenAI, it can also interact with images, allowing students to upload photos of past papers for assistance.

However, OpenAI acknowledged that students can still bypass the feature to get direct answers
The company also warned that the tool might exhibit "inconsistent behaviour and mistakes".
Devani noted that tackling academic dishonesty requires a broader "whole industry conversation" about updating assessments and establishing clear guidelines for AI use.
For now, 'study mode' represents a significant step in promoting AI as a tool for learning, not just for finding shortcuts.
Here's how to use ChatGPT's 'Study and learn' feature:
- Log in to ChatGPT.
- Under Tools, select 'Study and learn'.
- Ask a question to start learning.
Happy learning!
