A Brazilian mechanic recently experienced a life-altering event where a severe technological failure — which would typically be considered a disaster — ultimately acted as a life-saving intervention
Reinaldo Duarte de Almeida was commuting to his garage on the morning of Wednesday, 18 February, when he became the target of an aggressive pursuit by two stray dogs.
The encounter, which occurred on a public pavement, escalated rapidly when one of the animals lunged directly at his neck.
In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Almeida shifted his body to block the attack. However, this movement led the dog to sink its teeth into his trousers.
The animal's jaw clamped down exactly where his smartphone was stored in his pocket. The intense pressure from the canine's bite punctured the device's lithium-ion battery, triggering an immediate and violent explosion.
The resulting blast and subsequent fire injured both the mechanic and the dog, creating enough of a shock to frighten the animals away from the scene.
Following the incident, local emergency services transported Almeida to a nearby medical facility, according to local media. He sustained significant burns to his leg and the fingers of one hand, and required eight stitches to close a wound resulting from an initial bite.
Despite the traumatic nature of the ordeal and the destruction of his property, Almeida has maintained a remarkably forgiving stance
He has declined to press formal charges against the owners of the dogs after they offered a sincere apology.
Furthermore, the owners have committed to settling all associated medical expenses and providing a full reimbursement for the destroyed handset.
The Brazilian Military Police have officially recorded the event as an instance of negligence regarding the custody of animals
Meanwhile, the dogs have been relocated to the care of the owners' niece to prevent further incidents.
Reflecting on the bizarre nature of the survival, Almeida noted that while the explosion was dangerous, it served as a shield against a potentially fatal throat injury.
He told local media that although the phone was nearly brand-new, its destruction was a small price to pay for his life.
