Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) made waves at CES 2026 in Las Vegas this week by unveiling its second electric vehicle, the Afeela Prototype 2026

This new SUV-like model builds on the foundation of the Afeela 1 sedan, offering a more spacious interior and a rugged, high-riding profile. While technical specifics remain limited, the joint venture confirmed that a production version based on this SUV is slated for delivery as early as 2028.

While the SUV represents the future, the immediate focus remains on the Afeela 1 sedan, which has officially moved into production at Honda's East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio, the US.

Deliveries in 2026 will begin in the US and Japan

The Afeela 1 is scheduled for delivery in California later in 2026, before expanding to Arizona in 2027. Japan is expected to receive the Afeela 1 in the first half of 2027.

The base model starts at USD89,900 (RM395,000), while the Signature model starts at USD102,900 (RM452,000).

SHM emphasised that they are not selling an EV as a commodity, but rather as an intelligent partner

The Afeela 1 is packed with high-end tech, including PS Remote Play. Passengers can play PlayStation 5 games streamed from their home consoles to rear-seat displays using a DualSense controller.

The car is equipped with 40 sensors and cameras, including LiDAR, enabling Level 2+ driver assistance with future plans for Level 4 capabilities.

It is also powered by AI. An interactive personal agent powered by Microsoft Azure OpenAI handles natural dialogue and user requests.

One standout feature is the Media Bar, an external LED strip on the front of the car that communicates information like charging status or weather to people outside the vehicle.

Despite a cooling EV market in the US, SHM executives remain confident

They position Afeela as a niche, premium brand focused on software-driven experiences and "emotional" mobility, aiming to compete with the likes of Tesla's Model S and Lucid Air.
