Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed that social media platforms removed over 20,000 pieces of illegal content in the first 15 days of 2026 alone
The breakdown of the digital cleanup was startling. Between 1 January and 15 January 2026, authorities cooperated with platforms to take down 15,519 pieces of online gambling content and 5,421 scam-related posts.
Teo shared these figures during the HONOR of Malaysia 5th Anniversary Gala, highlighting the persistent risks of a highly connected society.
"This highlights the important truth that the platforms themselves have the responsibility and capability to act," Teo said.

She noted that while platforms manage the removals, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is tasked with identifying violations and enforcing compliance under the law
With Internet coverage in populated areas now exceeding 99% as of 2026, the government is shifting its focus from access to safety.
Digital technology has undeniably made daily life more convenient, but the deputy minister warned that education remains the strongest long-term defence against rising online threats like child sexual abuse material.

The initiative, which originally focused on schools, is expanding into roadshows for Malaysians of all ages to cultivate a culture of responsibility and ethical navigation in the online world.
The gala also celebrated HONOR's RM133 million contribution to the Pakej 5G Rahmah programme, ensuring 5G-enabled devices remain affordable for the B40 group and beyond.
