In a statement to People magazine, Pitt said: " I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids"

"I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

It can be remembered that Jolie filed for divorce on Monday citing 'irreconcilable differences', according to legal documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court. The actress has asked for physical custody of the couple's six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne.

Pitt reportedly said Jolie 'unleashed hell' because the entire family has become targets for the paparazzi

Reports from TMZ said Pitt had conversations with Jolie 'pleading' and hoping for her to handle the divorce 'like adults'.

Pitt said he wanted to keep the divorce under wraps for the benefit of their children, but instead, he says, **Jolie has painted him as a risky dad and asked for sole physical custody.**

As of now, the Hollywood stars' home is now surrounded by photographers, while the Los Angeles Police Department patrols regularly because of the media frenzy.

She also filed for Pitt to be granted child visitation rights and to share legal custody of the children

Jolie is being represented by divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who helped in her divorce from Billy Bob Thornton and has represented Johnny Depp in his divorce from Amber Heard. Pitt, 52, and Jolie, 41, first met when they played married spies in the film Mr And Mrs Smith, when Pitt was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston.

It can be remembered that the two waited for gay marriage to become legal, with Pitt telling Esquire magazine in 2006: "Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able to."

Jolie was previously married to British actor Jonny Lee Miller

Since Mr And Mrs Smith, the couple have appeared on screen together in By The Sea, a film both written and directed by Jolie and produced by Pitt, in which they played roles as a glam couple whose marriage is hitting rock bottom. Before they began filming, Jolie told the Radio Times: **"It feels a little daunting. We haven't worked together for 10 years. But all of the reasons why people say we should be scared of it, we feel that's exactly why we have to do this – because we can. So we're going to go boldly."**

"He's a pretty strong actor. It's going to be interesting. He's a really great artist, such an interesting artist, and of course he's the man I love, so I think we're going to have a great time," said Jolie in the interview

Back in May 2013, Jolie underwent operation and had a preventative double mastectomy after tests showed that she carries the BRCA1 cancer gene. I knew through the surgeries that he (Pitt) was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was going to feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn't going to let that happen," she said in the US TV show Today.

"To face these issues together and speak about them and talk about what it is to be human, I think can be a beautiful thing" she adds.
