This Band Could Be The Modern Version of VST & Company With An Electro-Disco Style
VST & Company + Daft Punk = Tandems '91 [OMG]
Cover image via tinypic.comYour uncle's playlist will never be the same as Tandems '91, doubles the high of it, with music that's both groovy and nice… that you would actually want to listen to it too!
Your Tita might call them a 'retro-futuristic' band and refer to them as "electro-disco" musical geniuses that reminds them of their younger years. Real deal is that, none can ever compare to the funk and groove that this group makes— that's unlike any other indie artists, in terms of style.
And yes! SAYS Philippines had the chance to interview Aaron David Cruz, their lead singer. 🙂
Recently the group released another single 'Something About You', that could pass as your perfect driving sounds in a chilly evening. The groovy guitar and arrangement will make your heart thump 'n dance.
'You're the One' on the other hand, mixes the cheesy yet sophisticated feel, that would remind you a lot of Daft Punk and Breakbot, with a filipino-style retro vibe, like the VST & Company — with a modern touch to it.
So here's SAYS Philippine's exclusive interview with Aaron:
Paula: What's up Tandems '91! We heard you have new song/s. What is it about?
**Aaron: Yeah, I posted Something About You in the tandems Soundcloud page 2 weeks ago but I wouldn't call it new cause I've written and recorded it 2 years ago; just decided to share it now. It's about a girl — chasing someone and being stuck/trapped in that chase.**
Paula: What inspired you to come up with these songs?
**Aaron: In general, I (sorry for speaking in the first person-singular POV-will be explaining that in a bit) get inspired by the most random things like nature, architecture, people, relationship dynamics etc etc etc—that's one of the reasons why I have other musical outlets Qelle and Serif [shameless plug]. But for Tandems it's always about memories and feelings.**
Paula: Who usually composes the songs, and who arranges it?
**Aaron: Ako yung nagcompose at nag-arrange ng lahat ng recording (Aaron—kaya palaging singular, first person POV) pero for live sets, we arrange everything together, in Starbucks, somewhere in Makati. We're always there after work with our laptops.**
Paula: How do you guys usually compose stuff, especially it's digital?
**Aaron: I just think of a distinct memory; I try to relive it in my mind, feel the emotions I felt during that moment and then write stuff—I usually start with 1 line ( usually intended for the chorus) and just branch it out— write the lyrics down in a notebook or a piece of paper, record the melody using my phone so I won't forget. Arrangement-wise, even though it's digital, it always starts with real instruments like a guitar or a keyboard. Then when the main parts are set, it's hours in front of a laptop, a mic and a midi-keyboard.**
Paula: Who are your musical references?
**Aaron: For recordings and live sets: VST and Company, Gary V. of the 80s, Prince, Breakbot and Daft Punk.**
Paula: How does it feel when girls are really into your music? We heard you guys have lots of fan girls!
**Aaron: That's weird! 🙂 We feel like we have lots of guy fans (Hi Ateneo high school friends). Ang maraming female fans Miles Experience, Jensen and the Flips and Sud hehe.**
Paula: In terms of inspiration do you guys have a relationship right now?
**Aaron: JR-meron. Nach, Aaron-wala!**
Paula: Who are your inspirations for creating these songs?
**Aaron: Para sa isang babae lang lahat yan… Pero komplikado. ☺**
Paula: Where are you guys performing and where can we catch you this month?
**We don't have lots of gigs cause we're not usually available due to our day jobs pero meron sa Route almost all the time.**
Ever wondered if they jammed without using the usual midi set-up?
Enjoy! 🙂
