Reports of Hui being in critical condition went viral yesterday, 27 October, with more than 20 celebrities visiting him in the hospital at the time

Among those who visited were movie star Chow Yun Fat; Michael Miu and his wife, actress Jaime Chik; actor Edwin Siu and his wife, actress Priscilla Wong; and actor Raymond Wong and his wife, stylist Kaka Mok, reported the Straits Times.

Known for portraying both villains and loving father figures in Hong Kong films and TVB dramas, Hui's recent role as undercover cop-turned-crime boss Foon Hei Gor in TVB's Line Walker series further propelled his decades-long fame, earning him the affectionate nickname 'Brother Foon Hei' among fans.

In recent years, Hui reduced his acting workload and settled in Singapore with his family to enjoy a semi-retired life.

He married Angeli Lung in 1992, and their daughter, Charmaine Hui, is married to Singaporean banker Shane Sim.

According to The Standard, Hui came from a prominent family in Guangzhou, China, long regarded as one of the city's most prominent clans.

His lineage includes Xu Baiting, one of Guangzhou's four major salt merchants, and his grandfather, Xu Yingkui, who was a godson of Empress Dowager Cixi. His extended family also includes Xu Guangping, the wife of renowned Chinese writer Lu Xun.

Hui moved to Hong Kong with his family in 1958 and later joined TVB's first Artist Training Class, becoming one of its inaugural students.

Early in his career, he was given the nickname "Benz Hung" because he often drove a Benz to work.
