A US couple in their late 30s is planning to retire early and move to Kuala Lumpur with their young daughter
However, before taking the leap, they turned to Malaysians online to ask a simple question: Is a range of RM270,000 to RM340,000 a year enough for a comfortable lifestyle in the capital?
The couple, both 39 this year, posted their query on the r/MalaysianPF subreddit over the weekend.
They explained that they've visited Malaysia several times and are strongly considering moving here under the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme.
Since the scheme requires property ownership, they plan to purchase a home in KL, removing rent from their monthly expenses.
"Based on our retirement budget analysis, we can comfortably cover USD65K per year in post-tax expenses (up to USD80K if needed)… By 'comfortable', I don't mean luxury — just a good, sustainable lifestyle for expats living in KL," they wrote.
Their budget works out to roughly RM308,000 annually, and they plan to enrol their 5-year-old daughter at a private international school and travel more frequently than they did when they were working.
Most Malaysians agreed that the amount would allow for a very comfortable lifestyle, especially since housing is already covered
One commenter broke it down neatly, saying, "There are private schools in the RM20k–RM40k per year range, you don't have to settle for the top tier posh ones.
"Your budget is more than enough for a comfy life. You could eat out daily, do a weekend holiday once a month or save up for a regional holiday once a quarter."
Another pointed out that their budget already places them well within Malaysia's highest income tier, stating, "Yearly cost for private school is about RM20k–RM50k. OP shouldn't face any difficulty since they're buying a house here through MM2H. That amount yearly is already considered T20."
Several users, however, cautioned that private international schooling would be their biggest fixed cost.
"Private international schools will be expensive, despite the USD. The cost not only escalates every year, but it's more expensive the higher the grade is. Some schools can be around RM200k (USD46k) annually, and the cost tends to increase," one user explained.
Others suggested they consider local government schools and use the savings for family experiences and travel.
Many agreed that RM300,000 a year would easily afford a comfortable lifestyle for a family of three in KL, though it's not an unlimited budget
"You could pretty much afford to do any activities you want, but this isn't going to be like 'ballin out every day' kinda money… this is definitely comfy considering the fact that you wouldn't have to cover housing," one comment read.
And in a cheekier reply, someone summed it up bluntly, saying:
"The wonders of spending USD in a third-world country."
The overall verdict was clear: for an expat couple retiring early with a paid-off home, RM300,000 a year is more than enough to live comfortably in Kuala Lumpur.
