But have you ever wondered why? After all, the room is supposed to be empty. So, why do we even bother knocking?

Here's the thing: it's not just a Malaysian habit, but a common practice across most of Asia

In Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and even China, many people do this as a sign of respect to any unseen "occupants" — spirits or entities — that might already be in the room.

The idea is to politely announce your presence before stepping in, so you don't "disturb" anything supernatural.

Here's how it's typically done:

  • Knock a few times on the door before entering
  • Some people say "excuse me" or "sorry for disturbing" out loud
  • Others might also flush the toilet, turn on the lights, or open the curtains right after entering — symbolic acts to clear out any lingering spirits

This practice stems from traditional beliefs about spirits inhabiting certain spaces, especially unfamiliar or "temporary" places like hotels. It's less about fear and more about showing respect, much like how one might greet a host before entering their home.

This isn't just good manners, it's actually part of strict hotel protocol. Staff are trained to knock twice, announce themselves, and wait 10 to 15 seconds before entering, to avoid walking in on guests who might still be inside or in, uh, compromising situations.

At the end of the day, knocking before entering is just a universal reminder that no matter where we go, a little courtesy never hurts. So, do you knock?
