A new art exhibition called Subculture is opening in George Town this March, featuring more than 20 artists from Malaysia and around the world, all showcasing works inspired by different communities, lifestyles, and creative scenes
Presented by Cultprint, Subculture highlights artists whose work is shaped by real-life experiences, personal stories, and the communities they're part of.
Instead of positioning subculture as rebellion against the mainstream, the exhibition looks at it as something lived, formed through everyday experiences, personal codes, and ways of seeing the world.

Visitors can expect a mix of paintings, sculptures, photography, installations, and printed works, so there's plenty to explore even if you're not a regular gallery-goer
The exhibition opens to the public from 7 March to 3 May 2026, coinciding with the Penang Long Art Weekend (6 March – 9 March), an independent citywide initiative that aligns exhibitions and art events across Penang to encourage dialogue within the regional art community.
In other words, it's a great weekend to walk around George Town and discover multiple art spaces in one trip.

The lineup includes both well-known and emerging artists, giving visitors a chance to discover new names alongside familiar ones
Among them are Lithuanian street artist Ernest Zacharevic, Malaysian artist Kenji Chai, Singapore-based artist Jolene Liam, and Ukrainian tattoo artist Kuro Neko, together with many other creatives working across different styles and mediums.

"We founded Cultprint on the principle that artistic practice is not solitary but communal; shaped and strengthened through exchange. Our annual group exhibitions reaffirm this commitment to dialogue, collaboration, and cultural continuity," said Sheena.
Today, the space has grown into a platform supporting exhibitions, collaborations, and creative projects within the local and regional art scene.
