For those unfamiliar, the Chopin Competition, held once every five years, is one of the most prestigious and demanding contests in the world, focusing solely on the works of the legendary Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin.

Born in Penang on 12 April 2001, Vincent started playing piano when he was just four years old

He later trained under Malaysia's renowned pianist and composer Ng Chong Lim, before furthering his studies with Eldar Nebolsin at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin.

He's also learned from some seriously big names in the piano world, including Elisabeth Leonskaja, Natalia Trull, and Boris Berman.

Vincent's first taste of international recognition came when he won the International Taipei Maestro Piano Festival in 2019. He went on to bag sixth place at the Singapore International Piano Competition (2020) and took first prize at the International Robert Schumann Competition (2024).

His talent has also earned him prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Maurice Ravel Piano Prize from the Susanne Scholten Foundation, and scholarships from the Clavarte Foundation (Switzerland) and the Lucia-Loeser Scholarship in Berlin.

This year's Chopin Competition saw a record-breaking 642 applicants from 20 countries, but only 85 pianists were selected to perform in Warsaw, and Vincent is the only Malaysian among them

Now, he's made it even further into the top 20 semi-finalists, a feat no Malaysian pianist has achieved before.

The semi-finals run from 14 to 16 October, where each pianist will perform Chopin's Sonatas, Mazurkas, and more, live-streamed from Warsaw.

"It's always been one of the things I've wanted to do since I was young. It's the biggest event and I like the challenge of it. It kinda forces you to really polish your skills and expand your repertoire in a way that you would probably never do if you only, you know, play concerts or something," he shared during an interview with Chopin Institute, adding that it's a "completely different level" of preparation.

The Chopin Competition is a career-defining event that has launched the careers of many world-famous pianists

The first prize comes with a EUR60,000 (RM300,000+) cash award and a gold medal, but more importantly, it opens doors to concert stages and orchestras around the world.

An international jury chaired by Garrick Ohlsson, who won the 1970 edition himself, will determine the top 10 pianists who move on to the grand finals (18 – 20 October).

Vincent's achievement marks a historic milestone for Malaysia, as he's the first Malaysian pianist to reach the third round of this world-famous competition

"I'll try my best to do justice to Chopin," the pianist shared.
