Missed The LHDN Tax Filing Deadline? Here's What To Do Next (Without Panicking)
You should still submit your return via e-Filing as soon as possible.
So, you've missed the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) income tax filing deadline. First — don't panic.
While it's important to act quickly, you can fix the situation, especially if you take the right steps early.
Here's what you need to know if you missed the deadline for filing your income tax in Malaysia.
1. File your tax return as soon as possible
Even if the deadline has passed, you should still submit your return via e-Filing on MyTax as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the higher the penalty could be — so the best thing you can do is to act fast.

2. Expect a late filing penalty
LHDN imposes penalties for the late filing of tax returns if there is tax payable. The penalty is calculated as a percentage of the tax amount due and increases with the length of the delay.
The initial penalty is typically 10% of your tax payable for up to 12 months of delay.
For delays exceeding 12 months, an additional penalty of 5% may be imposed, bringing the total potential penalty to 15%.
LHDN will calculate and notify you of any penalties incurred.
3. Don't ignore the situation
Avoiding it won't make it go away. Ignoring your missed deadline can lead to:
- Accumulated penalties
- Legal action by LHDN
- Difficulty getting loans, as tax status may affect financial approvals
- Increased chance of a tax audit
LHDN tracks taxpayer compliance closely. It's always better to be proactive.

4. If you have no income or no tax due… file anyway
Even if you didn't earn enough to pay tax, you should still file a zero-return to stay in LHDN's good books. Not filing at all can raise red flags and lead to issues in future years.
5. Reach out to LHDN if you need help
If you missed the deadline due to valid reasons (medical emergency, system issues, etc), you can write in to LHDN and explain your situation. While not guaranteed, in some cases, they may waive or reduce the penalty.

6. Set a reminder for next year
To avoid future stress, mark the key dates in your calendar for the Year of Assessment 2025 (filing in 2026).
Generally, they will fall on these dates, but do check LHDN's official website closer to the dates for confirmation.
- 30 April: Deadline for individuals with no business income (manual filing)
- 15 May: Deadline for individuals with no business income (e-Filing – typical extension)
- 30 June: Deadline for individuals with business income (manual filing)

Using LHDN's MyTax portal and app makes it easier to manage deadlines and documents. Consider setting up reminders within the MyTax system or your personal calendar well in advance.
