If you've ever stared at your bank account and wished food didn't cost so much, you're not alone

Value Food is a new Malaysian app helping you grab restaurant and bakery food at discounted prices instead of letting it go to waste.

Founded by a small team of local entrepreneurs, Taylor Ng, Hari, Dato Siva, Vishnu, and Akshay, Value Food was born from a simple idea: to solve two problems at once, the rising food costs for consumers and perfectly edible food being thrown away by restaurants.

"We realised there was a simple solution: connect surplus food with customers at a discounted price instead of letting it go to waste," they told SAYS.

Here's how it works: each participating store creates a 'Surprise Bag' filled with extra goodies from the day

You can find anything from pastries, bakery items, and ready-to-eat meals, to groceries and desserts.

The only catch is that you won't know exactly what's inside, but customers usually get way more value than what they pay.

Their merchants include Krispy Kreme, Milk & Barley, Paris Baguette, BHC Chicken, Touché Pastries, Curry Leaf Restaurant, and many more

There are over 80 merchants already onboard, mostly in Klang Valley, and they've just launched in Johor Bahru, with their ultimate goal to become Malaysia's go-to food rescue platform.

If you're worried about eating yesterday's food, don't be. Value Food is serious about safety.

All items are perfectly edible, the same ones being sold to walk-in customers that day, and must be collected within a fixed time window.

This isn't expired food; it's just surplus that would otherwise be tossed.

Right now, the app works on a self-collection basis to keep costs low and food fresh, but Value Food is growing fast

Why does this matter?

According to SWCorp, Malaysia generates about 17,000 tonnes of food waste daily, much of it still edible. Every Surprise Bag sold is a tiny victory for your wallet and the environment. By buying one, you're saving money, supporting local businesses, and helping reduce the environmental impact of all that wasted food.

Food waste might feel like a small issue, but with over 130 landfills expected to reach capacity by 2041, it's something Malaysia can't ignore. Every small action counts, and with apps like Value Food, making a difference has never been tastier.
