"Cleaning toilet with RM10,000 salary cries in RM1,700 basic salary," highlighting the disparity between Malaysia's minimum wage and Singapore's offer for a toilet cleaner.
The post quickly gained traction, with Malaysians commenting things like, "Country so competitive you need a degree to clean toilet" and "Ok, why would you need a degree to clean a toilet?"
One Redditor explained that such requirements exist to prevent health hazards, claiming that "some people use the cleaning chemicals to get high".
Others said that while the salary may not be considered high in Singapore, it would still be life-changing for many Malaysians.
"For people in desperate situations, a 10–13k salary as a cleaner is heaven-sent. Not everyone can reach that much income, no matter if you're a degree holder etc," said another Redditor.
"If we're living in Singapore, then that's not considered high income. But just being able to send RM1k to your family in Malaysia would do wonders."
"Really puts into perspective how strong our third world currency is 😂😭💯👌"
Many Malaysians also reflected on the state of local job opportunities
One commenter said it refects "the standard Malaysians have set, where even degree holders are willing to take on these types of jobs just for higher pay".
And one commenter summed up the sentiment, capturing the reality of many working Malaysians: "I would cry with my RM2,000 salary".
