Malaysian actress Fish Liew has won the Best Actress award at the 44th Hong Kong Film Awards for portraying a character with cerebral palsy

The Johor-born actress was recognised for her role as an artist living with cerebral palsy in the drama Someone Like Me.

The film follows Mui, a young woman with a disability, as she discovers newfound independence and self-acceptance through her encounters with a specialised organisation that helps people with disabilities explore their sexuality.

Like many acclaimed actors who have portrayed characters who struggle to speak and express themselves, such as Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape and Jackson Yee in Big World, Liew's performance is celebrated for its sensitivity, depth, and emotional authenticity.

These roles involving characters with non-standard speech patterns are often closely watched by awards bodies for their complexity and performance demands.

According to Malay Mail, Liew was nominated alongside other heavy hitters, including Zhang Ziyi for She's Got No Name, Fala Chen for Peg O'My Heart, Natalie Hsu for My First Of May, and Ma Li for The Dumpling Queen.

Meanwhile, Tony Leung Ka-Fai won Best Actor for his performance in The Shadow's Edge, marking his fifth win at the ceremony.

In January, Liew was also crowned Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards

The 36-year-old has now earned her second acting award at the Hong Kong Film Awards, after previously winning Best Supporting Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Ann, the sister of the late Anita Mui, in the biographical film Anita.

Liew developed her love for Asian cinema through her father, who often brought home films from his business trips, reported Tatler Asia.

After studying film and television in Malaysia, she moved to Hong Kong in 2012 to pursue acting and made her debut in Doomsday Party, which earned her a Best New Performer nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Since then, she has steadily built her career with acclaimed roles in Sisterhood, Limbo, and the Anita biopic, earning recognition across major Asian film awards.

Someone Like Me is still in cinemas with limited screenings. You can check showtimes and book tickets via TGV here.
