Malaysia is back in the spotlight after a viral social media post revealed that a scene from the new Chainsaw Man movie was removed for explicit content
In an Instagram post last Friday, 26 September, anime news page Daily Dose Of Anime reported that a swimming pool scene from the newly released 'Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc' was removed.
"Local distributors submitted an edited version to meet Malaysia's Film Censorship Board (LPF) rules, which place stricter limits on sexual or suggestive content.
"Because of these guidelines, shaped by local laws, culture, and religion, some intimate scenes are trimmed for theatrical release," read the post.

At the time of writing, the post has garnered over 10,000 likes
Several netizens, believed to be Malaysians, said they are used to such cuts in local cinemas.
"Not the first time here. Do you guys know we censored Superman's kissing scene as well?" read a comment on Facebook.
"From what I remembered at the theatre (I'm Malaysian), I believe they only cut the early segment where they take off the shirt, because that's the thing I don't see when compared to the actual manga. The swimming scenes where she teaches Denji [are] still intact though. Some may not realise it because it looks so clean," said another netizen.

Meanwhile, on Reddit, netizens recalled past instances of censorship that made global headlines within the anime and manga community.
"Didn't the Malaysian version of Attack On Titan [make] the titans wear pants?" read a comment, while another netizen shared an image of the manga cover of the same title, partially concealed by a sheet of paper in a Malaysian bookstore.

Chainsaw Man is a Japanese manga and anime series by Tatsuki Fujimoto that follows Denji, a young man who fuses with his pet devil Pochita to become a human-devil hybrid.
Armed with chainsaws sprouting from his body, he joins a government agency to hunt devils while struggling with survival, loyalty, and his own humanity.
The series' latest movie is currently showing on GSC and TGV Cinemas.
