Japanese Film Festival Returns With Screenings Across 5 States, Tickets From RM10

You can even catch a couple of movies for free.

The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) will return to Malaysia from 10 September to 19 October 2025, with screenings at selected GSC cinemas nationwide

Organised by The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), this year's festival will showcase a lineup of 13 films.

The selection covers a wide range of genres, from the live-action comedy Cells at Work! to Akira Kurosawa's iconic 1954 classic, Seven Samurai.

Foodies can also look forward to a culinary-themed lineup, including the opening film Sunset Sunrise, the documentary Northern Food Story, and the drama The Solitary Gourmet.

All films will be screened in Japanese with English subtitles, and you can even catch a couple of movies for free

On 10 September, JFF 2025 will host two special free screenings at GSC MyTOWN.

You can catch Northern Food Story at 4.30pm and Diamonds in the Sand, a co-production between Japan, the Philippines, and Malaysia, at 8pm.

Bookings for these free screenings will open on 3 September through online ticketing platform CloudJoi, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates on JFKL's official website.

For the rest of the festival, tickets are affordably priced at RM10 per movie, except for The Solitary Gourmet, which will follow the regular ticket price

Tickets can be purchased via GSC channels starting one week before the first screening in each region.

Here's a breakdown of the JFF 2025 screening dates and locations:

  • Klang Valley (GSC Mid Valley, 1 Utama, MyTOWN): 10 – 17 September
  • Penang (GSC Gurney Plaza): 18 – 21 September
  • Johor Bahru (GSC Paradigm Mall JB): 25 – 28 September
  • Kuching (GSC CityONE Megamall): 9 – 12 October
  • Kota Kinabalu (GSC Suria Sabah): 16 – 19 October
